Frequently Asked Questions

WHO HOSTS THE SALONS?

Any motivated individual or small team with a desire to promote good ideas is a candidate - agencies or small firms who have their own space are particularly encouraged to host salons. Once confirmed by team PSFK, hosts will carry the responsibility of lining up venues, assembling panels, promoting the salons, and handling various organizational and logical components (A/V, filming, print materials, etc.) As Good Ideas Salons are part of an ongoing, global series, PSFK requests that hosts commit to holding more than one salon.

HOW DO THE SALONS WORK?

There are 4 key roles involved with organizing a Good Ideas Salon:
  • HOST: Hosts are responsible for overall organization of the salon and may choose to sit in any one of the expert roles. (listed below)
  • THOUGHT STARTER: At the beginning of the salon, he or she helps frame the conversation with examples of the discussed theme, or a question to inspire the conversation.
  • MODERATOR: Introduces panelists and moderates discussion among panelist. The moderator is also responsible for facilitating discussion between panelist and audience members during the Q&A section at the end of the discussion.
  • PANELIST: 3-4 experts that discuss that month’s theme.
Recommended timeline:
  • 05 min: introduction from host
  • 10 min: thought starter frames theme
  • 30 min: moderator introduces panelists, followed by panel discussion
  • 15 min: Q & A between panelists and audience facilitated by moderator
  • 60 min: mixer

WHAT TYPES OF TOPICS ARE DISCUSSED?

Each month, PSFK provides a selection of topics that salons can choose from. Topics range from Design to Social Media to Storytelling. For more information and to see the current list, visit our Topics Page.

WHERE ARE THE SALONS HELD?

Depending on the size of the audience, Good Ideas Salons can be held in cafés, bars, offices, studios, theaters, universities, community centers, and rented event spaces. Hosts putting on the event in their own offices can benefit from creating professional credibility and providing a low-cost space solution. However, not all spaces are ideal for salons. Here are some key considerations:
  • Will there be adequate seating?
  • Will my location be convenient/central enough for my guests?
  • Will this space be available on an ongoing basis?
  • Will external noise levels be low enough for proper recording?
  • Are the venue proprietors aware of your needs and willing to adjust accordingly?
  • Is the venue cost-prohibitive compared to revenue received from confirmed guests?

WHO SPEAKS AT THE SALONS?

There are no specific qualifications for salon speakers. However, in order to ensure a high quality event, hosts are asked to consider the following:
  • The purpose of the "thought starter" is to frame the conversation and get people thinking. The person in this role typically possesses a high level of general knowledge or has a very specific point of view on a related subject.
  • The panelists are intended to discuss the topic from multiple perspectives and ideally come from diverse backgrounds. For example, if the theme concerns entertainment, the panel might include an industry executive, an industry journalist, and a media retailer—the retailer will see things the executive cannot and vice-versa. Diverse panels prompt unexpected connections and dynamic conversations.

WHO PROMOTES THE SALONS?

While PSFK provide the tools and the framework, it is the responsibility of local hosts to promote the events themselves. The Good Ideas Salons main page is a destination for general information and video content from past salons, as well as serving as a portal to local salon's pages. It is up to the host to maintain both their local page as well as their eventbrite page, as these pages contain specific information regarding each salon. Hosts are also given proprietary Good Ideas Salons collateral to help promote their events. Materials include:
  • Letterhead
  • Nametags
  • Posters
  • Web banners
  • Online advertisements

HOW MUCH ARE THE SALONS?

Because operating costs can vary greatly from city to city, the cost of attendance is up to the host. Typically, salons cost anywhere between $15 and $50 USD. Tickets can only be sold and purchased through Eventbrite.com, with PSFK retaining a 20% administrative charge on all sales.

WHAT ABOUT SPONSORS?

Hosts are automatically considered a sponsor and are therefore allowed to include either personal or professional branding on all promotional materials. Hosts are also welcome to source co-sponsors who are willing to donate services or monetary support in exchange for sponsorship. Some sponsors may opt to pay for the full or partial cost of tickets for their guests. While not encouraged, hosts will still be accountable for paying the 20% administrative charge for all attendees.

IS THERE A CANCELLATION / REFUND POLICY

PSFK has a no-refund policy on its commission once a ticket is sold. If a guest cancels, hosts can determine a refund policy with the remaining money (i.e. ticket price less 20%). If a host cancels, they must provide full refunds to all guests who have paid.

HOW ARE THE SALONS RECORDED?

PSFK requires that all salons are filmed and subsequently uploaded to the Good Ideas Salons video repository. The video is the chief way for your community to participate in a conversation with other salons from around the world.

WHO IS BEHIND THIS?

PSFK is a trends research and innovation consulting company that publishes daily, provides consultancy, manages expert networks and hosts events. We aim to inspire our readers, our clients and our guests to make things better – whether that’s better marketing, better service, new product ideas or a new way of working. In 2008, PSFK held the first series of Good Ideas Salons in New York in an effort to foster conversation about innovative ideas that make our lives better. The series was such a great success, we were inspired to create a network that enabled the rest of the world to share their good ideas as well.
